Kyle Sum, USC (Seeker)
What is it with LA-area college teams having a surplus of incredible Seekers?! Despite the fact that USC’s usual starting Seeker wound up not playing at the Western Cup and only Snitched there, USC still had some of the best Seeker play of any team at the Cup. The reason for that is Kyle Sum.
Kyle was one of the Seekers whom I had to Snitch against several times at the Western Cup. While it was a great challenge for me, it also would have been nice not to have to expend so much energy trying to fend off a top-notch Seeker. After each time that I faced Kyle, I came away incredibly tired.
It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly what it is that makes Kyle such a great Seeker. He’s not super-fast, but still fast enough to keep up with the Snitch. He’s not super-strong, but still strong enough to grapple with the Snitch. He’s not super-tall, but tall enough to have a pretty good reach and give the Snitch problems trying to keep him from reaching around the back to grab the Snitch.
Honestly, Kyle is such a great Seeker because he doesn’t have any weaknesses as a Seeker. He may not be elite at any one aspect of Seeking, but he’s great at all of them. Normally, a Snitch can figure out a Seeker’s weakness and exploit that. Snitching against Kyle is so difficult because you can’t do that. He doesn’t have a weakness to exploit.
Kyle also plays with a type of quiet intensity. He may not seem like the most intense person, but he just goes at the Snitch time and time again and wears them down. He is also incredibly smart, and seems to constantly be analyzing the Snitch’s movements in order to find an opening to grab the Snitch. Kyle always seemed to always know the opportune moment to have the best shot at grabbing the Snitch and what he needed to do to put himself in position to make that happen.
For a measure of how incredible of a Seeker Kyle is, look no further than the Finals of the Western Cup. USC won, 70-60, on Kyle’s Snitch grab. When the pressure was on, Kyle came through for his team. Considering the Seeker he was going against was the incredible Jeff Lin, that is quite an accomplishment.
He may not get a ton of recognition, but Kyle Sum is the embodiment of the phrase “quiet excellence.”
“quiet intensity”

This is the video that this GIF is from:
Last year I took a year out from university to study abroad and to travel. I’ve always loved to travel and the year was a really inspiring and freeing experience for me. During travelling I sent a lot of post home from the new places I saw. However, the postcards I found at every destination irked me. They were dull images and photos that most people have seen before, they didn’t express the excitement and happiness I felt during my travels. Therefore over Christmas I started drawing these places as I had seen them: bright, vibrant and colourful.
This was the starting point of my new project, this is my multi layered drawing of Paris. I wanted to create multi layers that could flip away like a children’s book. I wanted to create a sense of movement and the viewers participation in the scene.
